The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will offer live viewing and local participation for a Smithsonian Affiliations symposium, “Dialogues Across the Puerto Rican and Caribbean Diaspora.”
The ITC will carry the following sessions:
Thursday, Nov. 15, 9 – 11:30 a.m.: Puerto Ricans and Latinidad in the United States; and Noon – 1:30 p.m., Comparisons between Puerto Rican and Filipino Struggles for Sovereignty and Immigration Narratives
Friday, Nov. 16, 9 – 11:30 a.m, Caribbean Music Migration
Puerto Ricans have left their island for varied reasons and the 2016 demographic and socioeconomic profile reflects that close to 5 million Puerto Ricans live stateside, while the island population has diminished to less than 3.5 million. This migratory scenario reveals that many Puerto Ricans continue to become a part of new communities in the United States and to retain, transform, and reinvent Puerto Rican traditions, language, and culture while creating historical narratives particular to their U. S.-based experiences. The program aims to broaden the discussion on migration and to embrace other diasporic Caribbean communities.
Smithsonian Affiliations, the Museo y Centro de Estudios Humanísticos (MCEH-JCN) and the Conservatorio de Músico will bring U. S.-based scholars of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies, and other Caribbean scholars to Puerto Rico to engage in exchanges with Puerto Rico Island-based scholars about migration, music, art, literature, education, history, and diasporic experiences.
This symposium received Federal support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Latino Center.
Free and open to the public, with viewing in the auditorium. Does not include exhibit floor admission.
