Museums are more than a repository for objects — they hold layered histories, materials and stories that continue to shape the present. “Unearthed: Artifact to Artwork” invites contemporary artists to engage deeply with artifacts from the Institute of Texan Cultures’ holdings, using research, close study, and creative interpretation as tools for discovery.  

This exhibition reflects Texas as a region where culture is living, complex and constantly evolving. The selected artists approach the collection as a site of conversation rather than preservation alone, responding to historical objects through new works that bridge past and present. Their practices explore various themes, transforming archival materials into contemporary expressions. Together, artifacts identified by each artist and their creative responses speak to the various people and communities who have made their home in Texas, where art becomes a powerful way of understanding ourselves and our shared histories.  

By reimagining the collection through artistic inquiry, “Unearthed” challenges visitors to see museum objects not as fixed remnants in time, but as active participants in ongoing cultural narratives. This exhibition highlights the museum as a dynamic space — one where knowledge is excavated, meanings are re-examined, and new connections continuously emerge.
