The Institute of Texan Cultures is getting ready for a grand “Homecoming” as it opens its new space at Frost Tower in early 2026! The celebration begins with MUMENTOUS®, a colorful look at one of Texas’s biggest and most beloved traditions — the high school homecoming mum.

Originally organized by the Arlington Museum of Art, MUMENTOUS® showcases mums from across the state along with stunning photography by Amy J. Schultz, author of MUMENTOUS: Original Photos and Mostly True Stories About Football, Glue Guns, Moms, and a Super-Sized High School Tradition That Was Born Deep in the Heart of Texas.

Featured creators include:

Elizabeth Cleaver • Veronica Wiggins • Kara Palmer • Spencer Patterson • Ava Hermes • Cynthia Vasquez • Carissa Erves • Ariella Longoria • Susanna Mendez • Rebekah Lopez • Giannina Reyna • Dusti Freeby • Precious Gaitan • Darlene Bruno • Summer Kemp • Sherry Klander • Janice Waltz • Alison Thonn • Lori Rinewalt • Pricilla Hernandez

More Than Ribbons and Glitter

MUMENTOUS® traces the evolution of the homecoming mum from its humble beginnings in the 1920s to today’s dazzling displays of creativity. Through photography and storytelling, the exhibit explores Texas high school football culture, the DIY spirit, and the women who have shaped and sustained this enduring tradition.
