Cemetery

Cemeteries are decorated days before the celebration with the belief that the dead return back to their gravesite. The weeds and debris are plucked and removed before the addition of marigolds, which are beautiful orange and yellow flowers. Candles and incense are also used as decorations that are meant to welcome and guide the spirits back home.

People also decorate their specific loved one’s grave with different food, drinks, and favorite belongings of the deceased.

Nichos

In the 16th century, the Conquistadors brought with them nichos that are frames that held either a figure or image of a certain saint to bless the home.

Nichos are three-dimensional hand-made tin boxes constructed to display lovingly crafted scenarios and are known for their colorful design. They are made from materials such as cardboard cigar boxes, lightweight wood, and tin.

Sangre

SANGRE: Grana Cochinilla is a print series from artists of the Colectivo Arte Mixteca and students of the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Visuales – Universidad Autónoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca. The works pay homage to the artistic and cultural traditions of central Mexico, as represented by the cochineal beetle (cochinilla).

For centuries, indigenous Mesoamericans have cultivated cochinillas to produce a distinctive red dye. Following the period of Spanish colonization, the dye became another export in the resultant global economy.

SANGRE is not a Día de los Muertos collection, but it echoes many of the same images and themes. The cochinilla joins skulls, hummingbirds and other icons of the intersection of this world and the next as symbols of indigenous knowledge that retain their significance, despite centuries of conflict, repression, and external influence.

Tree of Life

The Tree of Life symbolizes familial bonds and how the living is still connected to those that have passed. Just as a tree grows, flowers, and bears fruit, families mirror this through new generations. Arból de la Vida holds pictures of those that passed away as well as ornaments that symbolize their life or remind the living of favorite memories. It is used as an extension of an ofrenda or to be a miniature version of one.
