Exhibit Overview
The UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures hosted a unique student exhibit for Día de los Muertos. A major piece of the exhibit included an Ofrenda, prepared by a UTSA Honors College class as a class project. Lecturer Alegra Lozano teaches HON3503: Día de los Muertos to a class of 16 UTSA Honors College students, in a variety of majors.
The students prepared an altar, or “Ofrenda,” to observe the tradition, with classic, modern, and interactive elements to observe the cultural practice.
Día de los Muertos is celebrated Oct. 31 – Nov. 2. The holiday tradition coincides with the Christian and Catholic celebrations of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2), and elements of all are represented as part of this holiday’s rich cultural traditions.
After the observance of El Día, the class’ ofrenda will be disassembled and a glass case installation will remain in place.
