Electricity was not common in rural Central Texas until the 1930s, and wealthier families were the first to receive it. Poorer families relied on kerosene lanterns for light. This “railroad style” lantern was produced by the R. E. Dietz Company, a major manufacturer of kerosene lamps since 1840.
