Not all families had the funds or space to keep a cow, but for those who did, it was a valuable resource for the family. Milk was only occasionally available at local groceries or commissaries, and it was sold at considerable markup. With their own cow, a family had a constant source of fresh milk, which could in turn be made into butter and other products.
